Special counsel David Weiss’ office filed evidence showing that Hunter Biden was compensated by a Romanian businessman to influence U.S. policy and end a local investigation. The prosecution plans to present evidence that Biden received compensation to influence U.S. policy and public opinion and cause an investigation of the businessman in Romania. Biden’s request to omit certain evidence in his federal tax case, related to him allegedly failing to pay taxes, evading an assessment, and filing a fraudulent form, was denied by the court.
Biden allegedly received a third of roughly $3.1 million to help the businessman contest bribery charges in Romania. Prosecutors claimed a business associate hired by the businessman would testify about efforts to press federal agencies to open an investigation to end the criminal investigation in Romania. The prosecution does not intend to present evidence of direct compensation from a foreign state or actions taken by Biden’s father that impacted politics.
The details of Biden’s work were considered relevant to the case to demonstrate his state of mind and intent during the relevant tax years. The evidence of his agreement with the businessman and his actions show his capacity and intent to influence U.S. public policy for financial gain. Biden’s trial is scheduled to begin next month.
