Taberon Dave Honie prepares for his execution at the Utah State Correctional Facility by meeting with family members and spiritual advisers. He has been on death row since 1999 after being convicted of brutally killing his ex-girlfriend’s mother. This will be the first execution at the new prison since it opened in July 2022, and the first in Utah in 14 years.
The prison was placed on lockdown in preparation for the execution, with roadblocks set up leading to the facility. Corrections officials have been giving hourly updates and preparing for the execution, emphasizing the need for a humane and professional process.
Honie has requested a final meal but considered his last meal to be one he had with his family. During the execution, he will be strapped to a gurney and two individuals will carry out the lethal injection. He will have the opportunity to speak any last words before a physician confirms his death. His body will be turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office after the execution.
Witnesses to the execution will include family members chosen by Honie, members of the victim’s family, law enforcers, prosecutors, and media representatives. Honie’s remains will be handled according to his wishes, which have not been disclosed. Utah Department of Corrections Executive Director Brian Redd acknowledged the challenges of setting up a free speech zone during the execution, balancing security and the rights of expression, as most of the land surrounding the prison is private property.
