Widow of D’Vontaye Mitchell calls for hotel employees to face upgraded charges in his death

DeAsia Harmon, the widow of D’Vontaye Mitchell, expressed frustration over the delay in bringing felony murder charges against the hotel staff who restrained her husband outside a Milwaukee hotel until his death in June. Charges were finally filed against four men – Todd Alan Erickson, Devin W. Johnson-Carson, Brandon LaDaniel Turner, and Herbert T. Williamson. Mitchell died from suffocation and the effects of multiple drugs, leading to a homicide ruling. Harmon and her attorney believe the charges should be upgraded to reckless homicide, as they feel Mitchell was beaten to death. The encounter was caught on video, showing Mitchell being held down for eight to nine minutes until he stopped showing signs of life. Two of the men were in custody while the other two were not, and all have been fired from their jobs. The hotel operator expressed cooperation with the investigation and sympathy for Mitchell’s family.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has compared Mitchell’s death to that of George Floyd, with Harmon emphasizing her husband’s gentle and kind nature. She wants people to know that he was not a violent or combative person. Harmon and her attorney feel that justice has not been fully served, and they are pushing for stronger charges and accountability for those involved in Mitchell’s death.
