David Dempsey, a Donald Trump supporter, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his violent actions during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He assaulted numerous police officers and was involved in some of the worst violence that day. Prosecutors sought more than 21 years for Dempsey, highlighting his brutal attacks on law enforcement officers. Dempsey used a variety of weapons, including pepper spray and flag poles, to assault officers during the riot.
Dempsey specifically pleaded guilty to attacking Detective Phuson Nguyen and Sergeant Jason Mastony, causing serious injuries to both officers. He was known for his violent behavior, assaulting multiple officers and rallying other rioters to join his attacks. Before assaulting officers, Dempsey stood in front of a gallows near the Capitol and expressed his desire to hang Democratic politicians, referring to them as “worthless cretins.”
In addition to the Capitol attack, Dempsey had a history of violent behavior, including assaulting protesters with bear spray in 2019 and using a skateboard to attack individuals at political protests. He was identified with the help of online sleuths and pleaded guilty to his Capitol attack case in January 2022. The sentencing of Dempsey is among the longest handed out in Jan. 6 cases, with over 1,000 convictions secured by prosecutors in connection to the attack. Hundreds of defendants have been sentenced to periods of incarceration, including Dempsey’s 20-year sentence.
