Hamas has called for a truce plan based on previous ceasefire proposals, including US President Joe Biden’s May 31 proposal, ahead of talks proposed by the US, Egypt, and Qatar. The group wants mediators to enforce the May 6 proposal, which includes the release of captives by both sides, rather than pursuing new negotiations that could prolong Israel’s aggression. Hamas has not rejected the ceasefire talks scheduled for August 15 but is studying the invitation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on the defeat of Hamas before agreeing to any ceasefire deal. Despite ongoing Israeli strikes on Gaza, Hamas remains committed to the proposal agreed to previously. The recent Israeli air strike on a school compound in Gaza City, which killed around 100 people, has been condemned by Hamas as evidence of Israel’s desire to escalate the conflict. However, the group remains willing to engage in talks based on existing proposals outlined by mediators. The talks, if they occur, will be the first time Hamas negotiates with Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the delicate ceasefire negotiations amid ongoing violence in Gaza.
