The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has strongly condemned the recent comments made by Israeli ministers regarding cutting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Specifically, Borrell called out National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for his remarks, which Borrell described as “incitement to war crimes.”
Ben-Gvir had stated that humanitarian aid and fuel should be stopped from reaching the Gaza Strip until all Israeli abductees are returned home. He also called for the permanent occupation of Gaza. These comments were made in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announcing Israeli delegation’s participation in ceasefire talks with Hamas to negotiate the release of hostages in Gaza.
In addition to Ben-Gvir’s comments, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich had also made controversial statements, suggesting that deliberate starvation of Palestinian civilians might be justified and moral in the current global reality.
Borrell urged the Israeli government to distance itself from these statements and to engage in negotiations for an immediate ceasefire facilitated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. He labeled the remarks from both ministers as “an incitement to war crimes.”
As tensions continue to rise in the region, Borrell’s condemnation highlights the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and a commitment to providing humanitarian aid to those in need in the Gaza Strip.
