In central Copenhagen, Danes celebrated the return of South Korean Samyang Foods’ spicy ramen noodles to supermarket shelves after a temporary ban. Three variants of the Buldak instant ramen line were removed in June due to concerns about their high capsaicin level, which can cause health risks like intoxication, nausea, high blood pressure, and vomiting. Samyang contested the ban, and it was partially reversed last month when it was discovered that two of the three variants did not exceed the critical capsaicin level.
To mark the noodles’ return, Samyang hosted an event on a ferry in Copenhagen’s harbor, where social media influencers and fans gathered to enjoy the spicy ramen. Participants, many of whom had been paid, tried the noodles served by chefs as the boat sailed through the city. The ban had been aimed at preventing children and vulnerable adults from consuming the noodles, which had become popular on social media challenges.
Despite the initial concerns, fans like a Copenhagen resident named Phillip expressed excitement over the noodles’ availability once again. Phillip had stocked up on 50 packages before the ban was lifted, and was happy to have a “good deposit” of the beloved noodles. The event marked a celebration of the reversal of the ban, with participants enjoying the spicy ramen and expressing their excitement over being able to once again purchase and consume the fiery noodles.
