Elon Musk, owner of the X platform, is set to host a live-streamed conversation with US presidential hopeful Donald Trump. However, ahead of this event, EU’s internal market chief, Thierry Breton, has sent a letter to Musk urging him to comply with legal obligations under the EU’s digital rulebook. Breton highlighted the need for effective measures to mitigate harmful content amplification during live streaming events on the platform.
Breton’s letter comes amid tensions between Musk and the EU over compliance with digital regulations since Musk’s takeover of X. The EU’s Digital Services Act classifies X as a ‘very large’ online platform, subjecting it to stringent regulations. This has led to legal disputes between Musk and the European Commission, with Musk suing the Commission in July over allegations of breaching the DSA.
The correspondence also raises concerns about X’s role in spreading content that could incite violence or disorder, referencing the platform’s involvement in recent unrest in the UK. Breton emphasized the need for strict moderation of all user content on X, including Musk’s own content with over 190 million followers.
With X having an estimated 300 million users worldwide and a third of them residing in the EU, Breton reiterated the EU’s commitment to enforcing the DSA to protect EU citizens from harm. The conversation between Musk and Trump is slated to be streamed live on X, highlighting the platform’s significance in the digital landscape and the challenges it faces in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
