Former Bingham County Sheriff’s deputy, Stephanie Grisham, appeared in court on Monday to face a charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter after being involved in a fatal crash. Grisham, 38, pleaded not guilty during the arraignment, where she was seen dabbing her eyes before Magistrate Judge Neal Randall in a Bingham County courtroom. Grisham was represented by attorney Dennis Wilkinson, while Adam Garvin from the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office acted as a Special Prosecutor due to a conflict of interest.
The crash occurred on February 1, where Grisham, driving a Bingham County Sheriff’s Office patrol SUV, veered into oncoming traffic while allegedly texting. The collision resulted in the death of 80-year-old Robert Beal and severe injuries to his wife, who was a passenger in the other vehicle. Grisham confessed to texting while driving, expressing remorse for her actions.
A two-day trial is scheduled for Grisham on November 21 and 22, with the misdemeanor charge carrying a maximum penalty of one year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000. Additionally, Grisham may face license suspension and probation. The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office requested Idaho State Police investigate the crash, leading to the charge against Grisham in July, after which she resigned from her position.
