Texas women with ectopic pregnancies who were denied abortions call for federal investigation – The Guardian

A group of Texas women who were denied abortions for ectopic pregnancies are demanding a federal investigation into the matter. Ectopic pregnancies occur when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, posing a serious risk to the mother’s health. In Texas, doctors are legally required to provide information on alternatives to abortion, even in cases where the pregnancy is non-viable.

The women’s advocacy group, Trust Respect Access, filed a complaint with the Health and Human Services office for Civil Rights, alleging that Texas’ abortion restrictions violate federal laws protecting women’s access to healthcare. The group argues that denying treatment for ectopic pregnancies puts women’s lives at risk and is a form of medical negligence.

The issue gained national attention after several women shared their stories of being denied abortions for ectopic pregnancies. One woman, identified as Sarah, recounted how she was told by a doctor that her only option was to wait for the pregnancy to end on its own, despite the risks involved. Another woman, identified as Rachel, was refused treatment for her ectopic pregnancy and later suffered a ruptured fallopian tube, which required emergency surgery.

Trust Respect Access is calling for a federal investigation into the denial of abortions for ectopic pregnancies in Texas, arguing that the state’s restrictive abortion laws are endangering women’s lives. The group is also pushing for changes to state regulations to ensure that women have timely access to safe and appropriate healthcare services.

The Texas Department of Health and Human Services has yet to respond to the complaint filed by Trust Respect Access. However, the group is hopeful that their efforts will lead to greater protections for women seeking abortion care in Texas.
