A ship in the Red Sea was targeted in a third attack suspected to have been carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the ongoing conflict stemming from the Israel-Hamas war. The attacks, believed to be sponsored by Iran, come as tensions rise in the Middle East following the assassination of Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh in July. The assaults have disrupted trade routes and sparked intense combat for the U.S. Navy. The ship was first attacked near the Houthi-held port city of Hodeida, with two explosions reported. A third attack occurred hours later, 110 miles northwest of Hodeida. The Houthis, who have targeted over 70 vessels since October, claim to be targeting ships linked to Israel, the United States, or the U.K. However, many attacked vessels have no connection to the conflict. The rebels have also launched drones and missiles towards Israel, prompting Israeli airstrikes on Hodeida. Amidst threats of retaliation from Iran, the U.S. military has deployed additional assets to the region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Georgia, USS Theodore Roosevelt, F-22 fighter jets, and the USS Wasp. The situation remains volatile as the conflict between the Houthis and Israel continues to escalate.
