The increasing global temperatures make it essential to have a cooling device in the home if central air conditioning is not available. The author, who lives in a New York City apartment, previously purchased window AC units without much research, leading to inefficiency and an unattractive appearance. This prompted them to explore newer models from two popular brands, July and Windmill. Both brands offer sleek, efficient, and quiet window units that are easy to install and operate.
After extensively researching the two brands, the author tested July’s AC while two colleagues tested Windmill’s for over a month during the hottest summer days in New York City. Both brands offer various features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, voice control compatibility, different fan speeds, and modes. July’s unit is compatible with multiple window types, offers additional filters for air purification, and comes with a sleek design. On the other hand, Windmill offers two models, original and WhisperTech, with the latter being more energy efficient and quieter. Both brands have interchangeable front panels for customization.
After thorough testing, it was found that both AC units were effective at cooling the spaces during heatwaves. Installation of both units was relatively easy, with July offering white-glove installation services if needed. Windmill also provides a trade-in and recycling program to make upgrading to a new AC easier. Overall, the decision between Windmill and July should be based on factors such as window compatibility, desired BTUs, noise levels, and available features.
