Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor and Democratic vice-presidential nominee, defended his military service against attacks from Donald Trump and his allies during his first solo campaign appearance at a convention of union members. Walz spoke at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ annual convention, emphasizing his pride in his service to the country and criticizing those who denigrate others’ military records.
Amid these attacks, Walz also addressed concerns about the timing of his decision to retire from the National Guard in 2005 after 24 years of service. He highlighted his dedication to the country and the importance of respecting each other’s service records.
Following this appearance, Walz spoke at a fundraiser in Newport, California, where he discussed his platform, including support for gun ownership with regulations, paid family leave, and clean air regulations. He emphasized the need for these policies and expressed confidence that they align with the desires of the majority of people in Minnesota and across the country.
Walz’s focus on fundraising in various states comes after a series of rallies with Vice President Kamala Harris in battleground states. His speeches have highlighted key Democratic themes, and he has been critical of Trump, characterizing him as “weird”. Additionally, Democratic voter registration has surged since Biden dropped out of the race, with Harris stepping in as his replacement. This shift in voter registration trends is seen as a positive sign for the Democratic Party as they head into the presidential election.
