Tropical Storm Ernesto forecasted to intensify to a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean

Tropical Storm Ernesto was passing by Puerto Rico with 65 mph winds, but was forecast to strengthen into a hurricane as it moved by the U.S. territory. Governor Pedro Pierluisi urged people to stay indoors after 6 p.m. due to storm conditions, with widespread power outages expected. Vieques and Culebra were placed under a hurricane warning, with a hurricane watch issued for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. The storm was expected to move across the western Atlantic later in the week, potentially affecting the eastern coast of the U.S. Ernesto could produce storm totals of 4 to 6 inches of rain in the Virgin Islands and up to 10 inches in southeastern Puerto Rico. The storm’s size and potential power mean that beachgoers in the continental U.S. could also be affected by dangerous rip currents and a 3 foot storm surge. The National Guard was activated in Puerto Rico and classes in public schools were canceled. Late Tuesday, tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 125 miles from the storm’s center. Overall, the storm’s impacts extend beyond Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with the potential for dangerous conditions along the eastern U.S. coast as well.
