650-acre fire to the west of Pocatello has been completely contained

A wildfire that burned about 650 acres west of Pocatello on Saturday is now fully contained, as reported by the Pocatello Fire Department. The fire started around 4:30 p.m. in the Michaud Creek area, causing both lanes of Interstate 86 near the Pocatello Regional Airport to be closed initially. However, firefighters were able to push the fire back, allowing the highway to be reopened around 6:20 p.m. Fortunately, no homes were destroyed, and all evacuation orders have been lifted. The cause of the fire was reportedly lightning, and windy conditions made it spread quickly. About 50 homes in the path of the fire were evacuated, but evacuees were able to return to their homes Saturday night. Firefighters from multiple agencies, including Power County Fire District, Pocatello Fire Department, and the Fort Hall Fire Department, worked on the ground and in the air to contain the blaze. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Idaho National Laboratory firefighters also provided assistance. Additionally, the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, Pocatello Police, and Idaho State Police helped with road closures and evacuations. As the fire is now fully contained, firefighters will remain on the scene on Sunday until the flames are completely out.
