In Sudan, fighters from the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces carried out a brutal attack on the village of Galgani in Sennar province, killing at least 85 people, including women and children. The attack, which began in late July, involved looting and burning of houses, and indiscriminate firing on unarmed residents who resisted attempts to abduct and assault women and girls.
The RSF has been implicated in numerous atrocities since the conflict started 18 months ago, including massacres and rapes. The recent attack in Galgani saw hundreds of fighters storming the village, causing widespread destruction and leaving more than 150 villagers injured. The group briefly retreated after facing resistance but returned in larger numbers to carry out the deadly assault.
Efforts to resume peace talks between the military and the RSF have been ongoing, with international diplomats involved in mediation. However, the talks faced challenges as the RSF boycotted the meetings in Switzerland. The conflict in Sudan has resulted in numerous casualties and large-scale displacement, with over 10.7 million people forced to flee their homes since fighting began. The situation has pushed the country to the brink of famine, with reports of mass rape and ethnically motivated killings amounting to war crimes.
The ongoing conflict has led to Sudan experiencing the world’s largest displacement crisis, with more than 2 million people fleeing to neighboring countries. The international community continues to call for an end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the devastating conflict in Sudan.
