Seeking Public Feedback on Proposed Improvements for US 20 Stretch Between Ashton and SH 87

The Idaho Transportation Department is seeking public input for the preliminary environmental study of U.S. Highway 20 between Ashton and the State Highway 87 junction. The purpose of the study is to enhance highway safety and operations by decreasing crash severity, addressing traffic growth, improving access management, and addressing regional freight movement. After a two-year process, several improvement options are recommended, including various four-lane highway alternatives. One option of adding more alternate passing lanes was deemed least beneficial and may not be recommended due to concerns about congestion and safety risks. Public meetings will be held in Ashton and Island Park to share developments and gather feedback. The study is a first step in efforts to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve mobility in the region. Public input is crucial, and ITD welcomes feedback on study alternatives. Recommendations from the study may be incorporated into future National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) studies, with funding beyond the preliminary environmental study not yet identified. The public is encouraged to attend the meetings or participate in the online meeting available from August 22 to September 5. For more information, visit https://www.eastidahonews.com/.
