Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reiterated the long-held Russian theory that the United States ordered the 2022 attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines. This comes after reports that German prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian man over the explosions on the pipelines carrying Russian gas to Germany. Lavrov stated that it was “clear” that the West was involved in the terrorist attack, with Washington being at the top of the command chain. However, he did not provide clear evidence to support his claim. The US has not responded directly to Lavrov’s latest assertion but has previously dismissed Russian suggestions of its involvement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also previously suggested US involvement in the attack. The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukraine’s military commander at the time oversaw the plan to blow up the pipelines, with Ukraine’s President initially approving the plan before trying to stop it after a warning from the CIA. Poland has confirmed receiving the German arrest warrant for the Ukrainian suspect.
The attacks on the pipelines occurred on September 26, 2022, off the Danish island of Bornholm, causing a sharp pressure drop and rupturing three out of four lines of the system. The explosions led to speculation about who sabotaged the project that delivered Russian gas to Germany, with no one claiming responsibility. The incident has heightened tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and the West.
