A tropical storm warning was issued for Hawaii’s Big Island as Tropical Storm Hone approached with 50 mph winds, expected to pass near or south of the island Saturday night into early Sunday. The National Hurricane Center issued the warning for Hawaii County, warning of life-threatening surf and rip currents across the island chain. The hurricane center predicted around 10 inches of rain for Hawaii’s Big Island and Hone was located 425 miles east-southeast of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, moving west at 16 mph. Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency issued a “red flag” warning for leeward areas of all islands on Saturday due to high winds increasing the risk of wildfires. Additionally, a hurricane to the east of Hone, named Hurricane Gilma, is also heading towards the Hawaiian Islands but is forecast to become a tropical depression while still in the sea east of the state. Despite this, there are no coastal watches or warnings in place for Hurricane Gilma.
