Idaho Governor Brad Little has announced a major investment of $40 million towards projects aimed at recharging the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer. The governor’s directive to allocate $10 million from the Idaho Water Resources Board comes in addition to $30 million provided by the Legislature and himself. Little emphasized the importance of protecting Idaho’s water sovereignty and avoiding federal intervention in the state’s water management.
The ongoing negotiations between junior and senior water rights holders were also addressed by the governor, who expressed confidence in finding a solution to the issue. The agricultural community in Idaho has been facing challenges, with a water curtailment order being issued earlier this year. Efforts are being made to find long-term solutions to ensure the sustainability of the aquifer and secure the future of agriculture in the state.
Governor Little highlighted the success of current recharge efforts and expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations with various stakeholders.
