The Island Fishing Community on the Frontline: ‘As long as we’re here, it’s ours’ in the South China Sea tensions

The tiny island of Thitu, located in the South China Sea, is at the center of a fierce territorial dispute between the Philippines and China. Despite being occupied by the Philippines since 1974, China also claims the island and much of the surrounding area. Thitu is home to 387 civilians who live in relative isolation, surrounded by blue waters and sandy beaches.

Residents of Thitu, led by Larry Hugo, the head of the fisherfolk association, are on the frontline of the escalating tensions with China. Chinese vessels have been increasingly present in the waters around the island, even harassing Filipino fishermen and blocking resupply missions to other Philippine bases in the region.

The recent clash between Filipino and Chinese vessels near Sabina Shoal highlights the growing tensions in the region. The introduction of new Chinese regulations empowering its coastguard to detain foreigners accused of trespassing has only added to the anxiety of those living on Thitu.

Despite the challenges, residents like Larry Hugo and midwife Nasreen Guarin continue to call Thitu home. They have found a sense of community and purpose on the island, despite the constant threat of conflict with China. As the tensions continue to rise in the South China Sea, the people of Thitu remain steadfast in their resolve to stay and defend their island, no matter what.
