Following allegations of racial hate crimes against the Utah women’s basketball team while in Idaho for the NCAA women’s tournament last month, a police investigation has revealed evidence that corroborates the players’ testimony. The Coeur d’Alene Police Department reported that approximately 35 hours of video evidence from businesses in the area have been collected, with one piece of evidence capturing a racial slur that was clearly audible.
The investigation is ongoing, with police working to determine the context and conduct associated with the use of the racial slur to determine if it constitutes a violation of the law. Utah head coach Lynne Roberts had previously stated that her team experienced several instances of racial hate crimes after arriving at their hotel in Coeur d’Alene, which was incredibly upsetting for all involved.
The university detailed two disturbing encounters, including players being subjected to racial epithets and threats from occupants of passing vehicles. Police are requesting the public’s help in identifying a silver passenger car that was caught on surveillance in the area at the time of the incidents.
