Chad Daybell, who was sentenced to death in June for the murder of his first wife and two stepchildren, has been granted more time to file for post-conviction relief due to “extraordinary circumstances” in his case. During a hearing on Wednesday, his appellate attorney argued the need for additional time to review the vast amount of evidence in the case, including 16,800 pages of trial transcripts and 12,700 gigabytes of other information. The judge approved the request for more time, acknowledging the complexity of the case and the need for effective representation. Fremont County Prosecuting Attorney Lindsey Blake did not oppose the motion for additional time, but emphasized that the extension should not be indefinite. The Idaho Supreme Court must approve the judge’s ruling for the post-conviction relief proceedings to continue. Daybell, who appeared via Zoom from prison, was found guilty of murder in a high-profile trial that lasted eight weeks. His current wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, is serving a life sentence for the same crimes. The court has recognized the need for sufficient time to review the extensive evidence in the case and ensure that Daybell receives effective legal representation.
