Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz faced off against Australian qualifier Li Tu in the US Open main draw debut. Alcaraz took the first set 6-2 in just 29 minutes, winning 89% of his second-serve points. Despite some unforced errors, Alcaraz remained dominant and broke Tu in the first game.
Tu managed to win a few points on his serve, but Alcaraz quickly broke again to take a double-break lead. Alcaraz continued to serve well, hitting aces and winners to consolidate his lead. Meanwhile, Tu, who had been out of the sport for six years before returning in 2021, put up a fight but ultimately couldn’t match Alcaraz’s level.
Alcaraz, who is on a 14-match win streak at major tournaments, is aiming to become the third man in the Open Era to win Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open in the same year. Tu, on the other hand, is seeking his first main-draw win at a Grand Slam. However, the odds were heavily in Alcaraz’s favor, given his recent success and dominant performance in the first set.
In other US Open news, Dan Evans toppled Karen Khachanov in the longest match in tournament history, lasting 5 hours and 35 minutes. This victory added to the excitement of the day session transitioning to the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.
