McDonald’s is continuing its efforts to become more environmentally friendly by making changes to its iconic McFlurry. The chain will be eliminating the plastic, dome-shaped lid and serving the ice cream treat in a new cardboard cup with four flaps to cover the top, starting September 10. This is part of McDonald’s ongoing goal to reduce plastic usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to the new cup design, McDonald’s will also be introducing a smaller McFlurry size called the Mini McFlurry, catering to customers looking for a smaller or more budget-friendly dessert option. These changes come as McDonald’s faces declining sales due to the decrease in restaurant traffic and spending. The chain has introduced a “$5 Meal Deal” to attract more value-minded customers.
McDonald’s has been making gradual changes to its menu and packaging in recent years to address environmental concerns. In 2023, the chain eliminated the plastic spoon used for McFlurries and replaced it with a reusable spindle and a smaller black spoon, reducing plastic waste.
CEO Chris Kempczinski has emphasized the importance of offering reliable, everyday value to customers, which has become a focus for the company as it navigates changing consumer behavior and preferences. The introduction of the Mini McFlurry and other budget-friendly options will help McDonald’s attract customers looking for affordable dining choices.
