50th anniversary of Evel Knievel’s historic Snake River Canyon jump

In September 1974, daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho, using a Skycycle x-2 rocket designed by engineer Robert Truax. Despite attracting thousands of curious fans, the jump was unsuccessful when Knievel’s parachute deployed prematurely, causing him to crash into the rocks at the bottom of the canyon. This event left Knievel visibly angry and the story unresolved for fifty years.

In 2016, Hollywood stuntman Eddie Braun successfully accomplished what Knievel could not, jumping from the north rim and landing safely on the south side of the canyon. The legacy of Knievel’s failed jump still resonates in Twin Falls, as the city will forever be linked to this daring attempt.

Despite the unsuccessful outcome, Knievel’s attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon remains a significant part of his legacy as the world’s most famous daredevil. The 50th anniversary of this event serves as a reminder of Knievel’s fearless spirit and determination to push the limits of what is possible. East Idaho News continues to cover stories like this one, providing the latest news and updates on events in the community.
