Tala Hussam Abu Ajiwa, a 10-year-old girl from Gaza City, begged her parents to let her go outside and play on her pink rollerblades despite the danger of frequent blasts and gunfire in their area. Moments later, her father heard two explosions and found Tala buried under rubble with her rollerblades still on. Despite efforts to save her at a hospital, Tala died from her injuries.
The image of Tala’s rollerblades poking out from beneath the shroud covering her body circulated on social media, sparking outrage and sadness. Her family described the incident as an Israeli missile strike, but this has not been independently verified by NBC News. Tala’s family had been internally displaced for months before returning home to Gaza City.
Tala’s father hopes that his daughter’s death will inspire the world to take action to end the ongoing conflict in the region. More than 40,800 people, including over 14,000 children, have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched a monthslong assault following terrorist attacks by Hamas.
As Tala’s family mourns her loss, they remember her as a lively girl who enjoyed playing, going to school, and spreading messages of peace. Her father, holding up her blood-stained rollerblades, hopes that her death will help bring an end to the violence and bloodshed in the region.
