A Rare Sighting of River Otters at Market Lake Wildlife Management Area
Last Saturday, a visitor to Market Lake Wildlife Management Area had a rare sighting of a family of North American river otters. The observer, Bill Schiess, noticed a young otter hiding in cattails, followed by three more otters emerging from the water. This was the first time in over 20 years that Schiess was able to capture photographs of the elusive animals.
The otters, including a mother and two young ones, displayed fascinating behaviors as they hunted for fish. The runt of the litter, smaller than the others, struggled to keep up with its siblings in the water. The family eventually retreated to a den in the bank to enjoy their catch before resting.
River otters are well-adapted for aquatic life, with the ability to close their nostrils and ears while swimming. They also have a nictitating membrane that allows them to see underwater. These creatures mark their territory with scent glands and claim an area of three to 15 square miles.
The experience of observing the otters in their natural habitat was a rare treat for Schiess, who encourages others to keep an eye out for these fascinating animals at Market Lake. For more stories like this, visit https://www.eastidahonews.com/ for the latest news and community events.
