Former President Donald Trump issued a threat on his social media platform, Truth Social, warning that he would attempt to imprison anyone engaging in “unscrupulous behavior” during the 2024 election results. Trump, who falsely claims that the 2020 election was stolen, accused Democrats of cheating and skullduggery. He stated that if he wins the 2024 election, those who cheated will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including facing long-term prison sentences. Trump’s threat is one of the most wide-ranging he has made while running for president, going beyond targeting old foes to include donors and election workers. Election workers such as Ruby Freeman and her daughter faced threats and false accusations of fraud from Trump and his allies after the 2020 election.
Trump has been making baseless claims about election interference and fraud leading up to the 2024 election, echoing his efforts after his loss in the 2020 election. He emphasized the GOP’s focus on election integrity during a speech in Wisconsin, implying that if Republicans prevent Democrats from cheating, he would not need to campaign. Despite dozens of unsuccessful legal cases filed after the 2020 election to overturn the results, Trump and his allies continue to push the narrative of election fraud. Some Democrats are concerned that Republicans’ legal fights in battleground states ahead of the November election could sow seeds of doubt about the results if Trump loses. A spokesperson for the Trump campaign was not immediately available for comment on Saturday night.
