Venezuelan opposition candidate, Edmundo González, has sought asylum in Spain after leaving the country in a Spanish air force plane. The Spanish foreign minister confirmed his arrival in Spain, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the political rights of Venezuelans. González, considered by the opposition and some foreign governments as the winner of July’s presidential election against Nicolas Maduro, departed following a government order for his arrest.
Venezuela’s vice president stated that González sought refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas and was granted safe passage out of the country to contribute to political peace. The opposition candidate’s departure came amidst post-election violence and diplomatic tensions in Venezuela. Many governments have not recognized Maduro’s victory and are demanding transparency in the electoral process.
González, a former diplomat, emerged as a candidate after opposition leader María Corina Machado was banned from running. Despite being a relative unknown, his campaign garnered widespread support from Venezuelans seeking change in the country’s economic crisis. Post-election turmoil has resulted in casualties and arrests, with González being targeted by the Venezuelan government over his claims of victory.
His departure coincides with Venezuela revoking Brazil’s authorization to represent Argentine interests in the country and allegations of assassination attempts being planned from the Argentine embassy. Both Brazil and Argentina have expressed surprise and rejection of Venezuela’s decision, urging Maduro to adhere to diplomatic conventions. The situation reflects the ongoing political instability and international scrutiny facing Venezuela.
