Ethel Kennedy, the beloved matriarch of the renowned family, passes away at the age of 96

Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy and sister-in-law of President John F. Kennedy, passed away at the age of 96. She had recently suffered a stroke and complications led to her death. Kennedy’s life was marked by tragedy, including the deaths of her parents in a plane crash and her husband’s assassination in 1968. She met Robert F. Kennedy in 1945 and they married five years later, raising 11 children together.

After her husband’s assassination, Kennedy founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and continued his work for social causes. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014 for her efforts. Despite facing more personal tragedies, including the deaths of two of her sons and her granddaughter from drug overdose, Kennedy remained dedicated to her family and their legacy.

In 2021, Kennedy opposed the parole of her husband’s killer, Sirhan Sirhan, stating that he should not have the opportunity to cause harm again. Her stance was supported by six of her children, but opposed by her other two sons. Sirhan’s parole bid was denied in 2022 and in 2023. Kennedy’s legacy is one of resilience, public service, and dedication to her family’s values.
