Head coach Chris Gonzalez faces allegations of abuse from University of Idaho volleyball players

The University of Idaho volleyball program is currently embroiled in controversy surrounding allegations of abuse against Head Coach Chris Gonzalez. At least 13 players have come forward with an 11-page complaint detailing instances of body shaming, poor injury management, and emotional manipulation by Gonzalez.

Junior and transfer player Emma Patterson recounted her unsettling experiences with Gonzalez, citing his use of fear to control the players. Former player Julia Dickeson also expressed concerns over the coach’s behavior, noting that previous complaints went unanswered, leaving the team feeling unsupported.

With multiple players opting out of practice and calling for Gonzalez’s removal, the university has launched an investigation into the allegations. Despite denying records requests for additional complaints against the coach, the university remains committed to conducting a thorough and timely investigation.

University of Idaho Executive Director of Communications, Jodie Walker, confirmed that support services are being offered to the student-athletes during this challenging time. However, Coach Gonzalez has not been placed on leave while the investigation is ongoing.

In response to the allegations, Coach Gonzalez declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation. With calls for a change in coaching leadership to improve the culture of the volleyball program, the future of the University of Idaho volleyball team remains uncertain as the investigation continues.
