Former Mormon Bishop Arrested for Sexually Abusing Daughter
John Goodrich, a former bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was arrested in Virginia this week on charges of sexually abusing his daughter, Chelsea, during a school field trip 20 years ago. Goodrich faces multiple felonies, including rape and sexual battery. This comes after an AP investigation exposed the church’s risk management playbook for handling child sexual abuse cases, which helped keep allegations against Goodrich secret. Chelsea praised the prosecutor and victim’s advocate for their work on her case.
Williamsburg authorities allege that a portion of the abuse took place during the “American History Super Trip” in 1999. Goodrich’s defense attorney declined to comment, and the police did not respond to requests for comment. Goodrich had previously faced similar charges in Idaho but was excommunicated from the church. The case was dropped due to a clergy-penitent privilege loophole. The AP’s investigation revealed that the church offered Chelsea and her mother money in exchange for a confidentiality agreement.
Another alleged victim later came forward, accusing Goodrich of drugging and sexually assaulting her. Despite reaching a plea agreement in that case, Goodrich remained free and practicing dentistry. He turned himself in to Virginia authorities and posted bail. Goodrich is expected to appear in court in April. The church stated that it does not condone abuse and confirmed that Goodrich has not been readmitted following his excommunication.
