Forget Sharks and Bears: It’s Deer You Should Be Concerned About!

Press Release: Growing Concerns Over Deer-Vehicle Collisions in the U.S.

(CNN) — A recent incident involving Bonnie Sashin and her husband highlighted the alarming issue of deer-vehicle collisions, prevalent across much of the United States. After leaving a Thanksgiving family gathering in Fairfield, Connecticut, the couple collided with a deer shortly after nightfall. Fortunately, they escaped unhurt, but their vehicle sustained damage—echoing a wider trend identified by wildlife experts.

Every year, approximately 2.1 million deer-vehicle collisions occur in the U.S., leading to over 59,000 injuries and approximately 440 fatalities. Surprisingly, these figures exceed those linked to sharks, bears, and other dangerous wildlife combined. Kip Adams, Chief Conservation Officer with the National Deer Association, emphasizes the need for motorists to be aware of when deer are most active—dawn and dusk—and the peak seasons of spring and autumn, particularly November.

Colder months also see heightened deer activity as mating season begins, increasing the risk of encounters. While collisions happen nationwide, certain states are at greater risk. According to State Farm’s annual report, West Virginia tops the list with a 1 in 40 chance of an animal-related accident, followed closely by Montana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Experts recommend practical driving tips to mitigate risks, such as using high beams in deer-heavy zones and staying alert during high-risk times. Importantly, drivers should not swerve to avoid deer, as this can lead to more severe accidents. Instead, maintaining steady control of the vehicle is advised.

As holiday travel continues, raising awareness on the increasing risk of deer encounters can help protect both drivers and wildlife alike.
