An Arizona produce company, SunFed, has issued a recall for all sizes of its whole, fresh American cucumbers in 26 states and parts of Canada due to potential contamination with salmonella. The cucumbers were sold from October 12 to November 26 and were packaged in bulk containers marked with the SunFed label or in generic boxes or crates with stickers naming the grower. The affected cucumbers were distributed through food service and retail outlets in various states and parts of Canada. Consumers are advised to check if their cucumbers match those that were recalled and to avoid consuming or distributing any suspicious produce. Recalled cucumbers were also linked to a salmonella outbreak in South Florida earlier this year.
SunFed president Craig Slate stated that they are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the contamination and are taking steps to protect consumers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the United States each year. SunFed is urging consumers to throw out any recalled products and is cooperating with the implicated ranch to address the issue. This recall is part of efforts to prevent serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
