A federal judge has dismissed Grammy award-winning singer Lizzo from a harassment lawsuit filed by a wardrobe stylist, Asha Daniels, due to lack of standing. The judge dismissed all seven causes of action against Lizzo individually, stating that Daniels should have sued Lizzo’s touring and payroll companies instead, with Lizzo’s production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., remaining a defendant in the case. Lizzo’s attorney Martin D. Singer praised the court ruling and threatened to take legal action against Daniels for malicious prosecution.
The lawsuit, filed in September 2023, accused wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura of making inappropriate comments and treating the performers poorly. Daniels was fired after complaining about Nomura, prompting her to file the lawsuit against Lizzo and others on the singer’s team. Lizzo’s team denied the allegations, claiming they were attempts to hinder an honor Lizzo was set to receive from the Black Music Action Coalition.
Lizzo’s attorney also stated that the lawsuit was a false and publicity stunt, as the singer was being recognized for her philanthropic work and commitment to social justice. Lizzo’s team criticized the timing of the lawsuit, suggesting that it was an attempt to tarnish the singer’s reputation ahead of receiving the award. Despite being removed from the lawsuit individually, Lizzo’s production company still faces legal action in the case.
