Vandals Reignite Quest for King Spud Against Bengals

The Idaho Vandals are set to face off against the Idaho State Bengals in a highly anticipated matchup for the “Battle for King Spud” trophy. The rivalry game will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1, with both teams vying for the honor of claiming the trophy by winning at least three of the four regular-season matchups between the men’s and women’s teams.

Last season, the Vandals and Bengals split their matchups with both teams winning on their home court. Idaho State currently holds onto the trophy after reintroducing it in 2022, but the Vandals are determined to reverse that trend.

The Bengals have been a defensive force this season, ranking fourth in the nation in rebound margin and excelling at keeping opponents away from the net. Offensively, point guard Dylan Darling has been a standout player, averaging 16.9 points per game and ranking high in assists and assist to turnover ratio.

Idaho and Idaho State have a long history of rivalry, with the Bengals holding a lead in recent matchups. The Vandals will be looking to secure a win in Pocatello for the first time since 2017 as they aim to take home the King Spud trophy.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with the Voice of the Vandals, Dennis Patchin, calling the action. Vandal fans are encouraged to tune in to witness the fierce competition between these two in-state rivals.
