Students from Mountain View Middle School in Blackfoot are making waves in the music world through a collaboration with composer JaRod Hall on a piece called “Tock.” The band class was selected by Beyond the Notes to participate in the ComMission Possible Project, where students help inspire new compositions by submitting ideas and feedback. Hall, known for his engaging wind band compositions, chose the school’s submission for his repertoire. Band director Cameron Baker saw an application for the project on Facebook and entered his class of 30 students. The students, spanning three ensembles, were excited to have the opportunity to work with a renowned composer. Each student contributed their musical ideas, with one student’s concept making it to the top 15 submissions nationwide. Although not chosen as the final inspiration for “Tock,” the experience was still a remarkable achievement for the student and the school.
Baker emphasized that being in a rural community should not limit musical opportunities, and the students’ participation in the project allowed them to contribute to a larger musical creation. The completed composition will be premiered at the school’s final concert in May. Baker expressed pride in his students’ dedication and hoped that this experience would open doors for future opportunities. He mentioned the possibility of participating in more ComMission Possible projects in the future and even hosting a composer for a world premiere performance at the school. Overall, the project has been a unique and enriching experience for the students, providing them with memories that will last a lifetime.
