Parents of missing Pitt student Sudiksha Konanki plead with Dominican Republic police to declare her deceased

The family of missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has requested the Dominican Republic National Police to declare her dead after she went missing during spring break on March 6. Despite an extensive search, her body has not been found. Konanki, a junior in biology from Virginia, was last seen at a beach in the Dominican Republic with friends, later remaining there with people she met on the trip. Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University, was the last known person to have seen Konanki and authorities have confiscated his passport as part of the investigation. Riibe has been cooperating with authorities and claimed that they were in waist-deep water when a wave took them out to sea, with him eventually getting Konanki back to shore before she disappeared. No signs of violence were found at the beach where she vanished, and red flags indicating strong waves were flying at the time. Authorities have clarified that no one is considered a suspect in Konanki’s disappearance, with U.S. authorities treating it as a missing persons case rather than a criminal matter. Riibe is not allowed to leave the hotel and is being accompanied by police at all times. The family is still awaiting closure despite the lack of evidence indicating foul play in Konanki’s disappearance.
