Officials report that 14 people were killed in a Russian assault on a Ukrainian supermarket | Latest updates on the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Ukraine has accused Russia of carrying out a targeted attack on a supermarket in Kostiantynivka, killing at least 14 people and injuring 43 as Ukrainian forces continue their push into Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that Russia will be held accountable for the terror they have caused.

The UN’s Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that July was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since October 2022, with an alarming trend of increasing civilian casualties since March 2024 due to Russian bombardments. Russian authorities declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region in response to the Ukrainian incursion, sending reinforcements to counter the attack.

The US Department of Defense expressed support for Ukraine’s actions, which are aimed at pushing back Russian forces and showing that the war is creeping into Russian territory. Military analysts have described Ukraine’s offensive as a bold move to challenge Russia and weaken Putin’s regime.

The Ukrainian military intelligence agency also carried out a raid on the Russian-occupied Kinburn Spit, destroying armoured vehicles. The offensive is seen as a way to divert Russian forces from other fronts and undermine Putin’s strength. Analysts believe the goal is to expose Putin’s regime as vulnerable and compel his elites to reconsider their support.

Overall, Ukraine’s aggressive actions in Kursk and Kinburn are seen as a strategic move to challenge Russia’s authority and shake the confidence of Putin’s government. The conflict continues to escalate, with both sides preparing for further confrontations in the ongoing war.
